  • Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now! Co-Host

What does “balance” mean in the American media? Are the cultural and ethnic perspectives of citizens diluted in what we read, hear, and watch? What does it mean to hear another side? Join KSFR – Santa Fe’s Own Public Radio Station for an evening of insight and conversation with George Peck award-winning journalist, Juan Gonzalez, as he dissects the inequities in the media from the days of the first colonial newspaper to the age of the Internet.

A professional journalist for over thirty years and founder of the National Association for Hispanic Journalists, Gonzalez was one of the first reporters to write about the health effects of first-responders and citizens at Ground Zero following the September 11th terrorist attacks. An advocate for young Latino journalists, Gonzalez created the Parity Project to build partnerships between local communities and media outlets to grow the coverage of issues affecting the Hispanic community.

Author of three books examining the environmental consequences of the World Trade Center collapse, a history of Latinos in America, and his latest book, News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media, Gonzalez considers how major political debates and the rise of media conglomerates led to the rise of the alternative media forged by the African-American, Latino, Native American, and Asian communities.

A diligent advocate on the page and on the radio, Gonzalez pursues stories that others neglect as the co-host of Democracy Now!, the only public media program in the country airing on radio, satellite, cable television and the Internet with broadcasts on over 900 radio stations including KSFR.

Tickets are $15.00 each. For reservations and information, please call 428-1789.
